There are several important steps that must be taken in the event of a death. Depending on where the death occurs and under what circumstances, the following will explain what to do:
DEATH IN AN INSTITUTION: When a death occurs at a hospital or nursing home, the medical staff will ask which funeral home you are using and they will notify us for you.
ANTICIPATED DEATH AT HOME: Today more people with terminal illnesses are electing to die at home under the care of Hospice. You just need to notify them that Honquest is your funeral home of choice and they will notify us when the death occurs.
UNANTICIPATED DEATH AT HOME OR ELSEWHERE: In these circumstances, you should call 911 immediately. The emergency personnel will then determine the appropriate steps to be taken. Often they can release the person to the funeral home, however in certain cases, the person may need to go to the County Coroner for an autopsy so that a cause of death can be determined.
DEATH OUT OF STATE: If the death occurs out of state, medical personnel should call us toll-free, 888-212-2820 or 815-636-5100. We can then coordinate with a funeral home in that area to arrange for cremation there or transportation to Honquest. Being a member of several national organizations, Honquest can make the necessary arrangements and often save the family money as well as give them peace of mind that all the details are being taken care of.
