Gladys V. Tennyson

Gladys V. Burt Tennyson, 80, of Roscoe, IL passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 21, 2016 in her home surrounded by her loving family. Gladys was born June 24, 1935 in Buffalo, SD. After graduating from Buffalo High School she boarded a train with her sister, Lucille, and her 6 month old daughter, Sandy. Hearing of employment in Northern Illinois, they headed to Waukegan, IL and both started working at Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago. Attending Calvary Temple Church in Waukegan, she became best friends with Carol Wenzel Tennyson. Together they both attended Evangel College for one year. They both married brothers, Neil and Johnny Tennyson. Gladys married the love of her life, Neil, and they have been married for 57 years. They raised two boys Greg, who predeceased them, and Scott. In the beginning she was a “stay at home mother” and then went back to work as a Special Education teacher’s assistant.  In her final years before her retirement she was the Circulation Manager for the Salvation Army Headquarters from October 1989 to July 2000.  After retiring, she and Neil went to Florida and resided there for 7 years, coming back to be near family. Devoted to her Christian faith, Gladys attended Hope Evangelical Free Church until her health prevented her from attending on a regular basis. She did attend a weekly Bible Study from Hope and became close friends with all of the ladies in the group. She has always enjoyed being with her family, socializing with friends, reading, and traveling.  

Gladys was the loving and caring mother to Scott (Kim) Tennyson, Roscoe, IL; devoted and supportive grandmother to Caitlyn and Courtney, daughters of Greg Tennyson and Sharon Spoelstra Tennyson; and Zachary, son of Scott and Kim Tennyson; and brother, Bill Burt, WY. She was the daughter of the late Jack and Violet (Juhala) Burt; predeceased by her two sisters, Stella Thompson, ND, Lucille Cook, WI; brother, Henry J. (Catherine) Burt, PA; and her son, Greg Tennyson.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2016 in Hope Evangelical Free Church, 5656 Elevator Road, Roscoe, IL with a visitation from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service in the church. Cremation rites to be accorded following the service.
