Sue J. Smith Flueckiger, 87, of Rockford, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2021. She was born on November 5, 1933 in Rockford to Richard and Mary (Mitchell) Lawrence and was the youngest of 11 children. She graduated from East High School in 1952. Sue married Daryle “Chip” Smith January 3, 1953. They were married for 27 years until he passed away in 1980. Sue remarried Rudolph “Rudy” Flueckiger in May of 1982. They were married for 37 years until he passed away in 2019. Sue prided herself on being a homemaker, wife, mother, aunt, grandma, and great- grandma. She was a friend to all that knew her due to her sweet disposition and captivating smile. Sue spent many years as a snowbird enjoying her home in Fort Myers, Florida and returning to visit family in Rockford only in the hot summer months and during the holidays. She moved back to the Rockford area full-time in 2017 to be closer to her family. Sue loved her family, any kind of flower, music, dancing, and anything that sparkled. She was the heart and soul of her family and loved hosting big family gatherings on holidays, special occasions, or just because. She especially loved having her children and grandchildren visit their home in Florida to swim, fish, collect shells on the beach, and eat large slices of watermelon. Her absence will leave a void in all of our hearts.
Sue’s family would like to extend their gratitude to Linconshire Place and Transitions Hospice for the kind and loving care they provided to her at the end of her life. It is rare to find such special people to care for and offer comfort to a loved one. They treated Sue like she was a member of their own family. We can never fully express our thanks for everything they did support Sue and her family.
Sue is predeceased by her parents; both spouses; infant son, Thomas Michael; son-in-law, George Davis III; brothers, Roy, Walter, Richard, Dale, Jack; and sisters, Pearl, Ruth, Marie, and Dorothy.
Sue is survived by her children, Vickie (Joe) Villagomez, Robin Davis, and Todd (Lena) Smith; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Davis Robinson, Melissa (Robby) Wissinger, and Andrew (Ally) Davis; her great-grandchildren, Emma Wissinger, Molly Robinson, Sean Robinson, Cameron Wissinger, Grayson Davis, Addalynn Davis; her sister Avis Vaughan; many nieces and nephews; and friends who loved her dearly.
