Stephen "Steve" Zillhart

Stephen “Steve” Leigh Zillhart, 81, of Machesney Park, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, with family by his side. He was born in Rockford, Illinois, on November 9, 1944, and raised by Leigh and Violet Zillhart.

He married Linda on January 7, 1964, at St. John’s Church on West State Street. Together they shared 47 years of marriage.

Steve attended West High School in Rockford. Following high school, he built a long and respected career as a skilled carpet installer throughout the Rockford area. His craftsmanship was widely recognized, and he took great pride in the quality of his work.

Outside of work, Steve enjoyed stock car racing, especially at the Rockford Speedway, playing guitar, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Richard Leigh “Rick” (Carrie) Johnson, Corey Shane Zillhart, and Eric Jason (Paula) Zillhart; grandchildren, Troy (Laura Yurchak) Gregory, Evan Gregory, Kara Lynn (Thomas) Saitta, Zoe Lynn Zillhart, Payton Elizabeth Zillhart, and Stellan Johnson-Zillhart; sister, Margo Linderoth; and brother, Mark (Susan) Zillhart.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Sue Zillhart, and son, Troy Stephen Zillhart.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Mercy Hospital, with special thanks to Grace, for their compassionate care.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory – Roscoe Chapel, 11342 Main Street, Roscoe, Illinois 61073. A private burial will take place on Monday, June 29, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family to help with expenses.
