Shirley A. Hicks - Schoonover

Shirley A. Hicks - Shoonover, 92, of Machesney Park, IL, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on December 17, 2024.  Born in Harrison Township (Winnebago County), IL, on December 19, 1931, Shirley was the daughter of Clyde and Grace (Hevrin) Gruner. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose kindness, humor, and strength touched all who knew her.

Shirley enjoyed simple pleasures in life, including garage sales and baking, and she was an active member of the VFW Post 342 Auxiliary. She dedicated much of her life to caring for her family and supporting her community. Shirley's warmth and generosity will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her children, Judy (Richard) Evans, Gail Czyzewski (Steven) Hakes, Dona Leach, Douglas (Connie) Hicks, Glenda Watson, and Nola (Ian) Serrano; daughter-in-law, Alisabeth Thurston-Hicks, grandchildren, Renee Dittbenner, Roxanne Logan, Eric Czyzewski, Heide Angeli, Tracy Guthrie, Devlin Neal, Aimee Neff, Sara Hicks, Daniel Hicks, Makayla Hicks, Rachael Hicks, Amanda Dabson, Erin Vargas, Austin Tyler, Angela Gonzalez-Hicks, and Catherine Hicks; 15 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Richard Gruner, and several nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by her two late husbands, Everett Hicks and Robert Schoonover; her sons, Lyle Hicks and Paul Hicks; and her grandchildren, Shannon, Shane, and Ryan.

A Celebration of Life will be held on January 11, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Loves Park City Hall, 100 Hearts Blvd., Loves Park, IL 61111.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. Shirley's family wishes to thank all those who have supported them during this difficult time.
