Sandra J. Winkelman

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sandra Jean Winkelman, age 86, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Sandra passed away peacefully at home in Rockford, IL on April 7, 2025, surrounded by love.

Born on July 23, 1938, in Chicago, IL, Sandra was the daughter of Charles and Lavernne Kabelis. In 1962, she met the love of her life, Robert G. Winkelman, and the two were married on April 18, 1964. They would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this year, a testament to their enduring love and partnership.

Sandra and Robert built a life together rooted in family and devotion. They had two children, Scott (deceased 1976) and Victoria, Sandra poured her heart into raising her family. She worked for the State of Illinois in the Public Aid Department as a switchboard operator, retiring after nearly 20 years of dedicated service.

Sandra was known for her warm smile, kind heart, and unshakable love for her family—especially her grandchildren, Mason and Connor. She was their biggest cheerleader, never missing a play, a game, or a chance for an adventure. She cherished every moment with them, and those memories will live on in their hearts.

Beyond her family, Sandra had a gift for bringing people together. She proudly took on the role of social coordinator among her friends, planning monthly dinners, holiday gatherings, and special occasions with enthusiasm and joy. Her thoughtfulness and ability to make others feel special left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to Heartland Hospice, especially Sandra’s nurse, Natalie Parvin, whose compassionate care and gentle presence brought immense comfort in her final days.

Sandra is survived by her loving husband, Robert; her daughter, Victoria; and her cherished grandchildren, Mason and Connor.

A celebration of Sandra’s life will be held on Sunday, May 4th, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in Forest Hills Country Club, 5135 Forest Hills Rd, Rockford, IL 61114.
