Samuel C. Pulliam, Sr., 76, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Samuel was born on May 12, 1949, to Charles and Tellma (Chandler) Pulliam and was raised in the Rockford area, which he proudly called home throughout his life. At the age of 17, Samuel enlisted in the United States Army. Following basic training, he was stationed in Europe for a year and went on to serve honorably for three years. He remained proud of his time in service and his role in defending our country.
After returning to Rockford, Samuel focused on building a life and starting a family. He was a loving father to his children, Sam Jr. and Machelle. It was during this chapter of his life that he pursued barber school, discovering a true passion for hairstyling. He went on to enjoy a long career as a professional hair stylist, forming lasting relationships with clients and colleagues alike.
Samuel will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
Samuel is survived by his children, Sam (Rachel) Pulliam, Jr. and Machelle (Brian) Holt; grandchildren, Chad (Amber) Holt, Amy Holt, Gary Douglas, Dustin (Arianna) Pulliam, Tara (Brandon) Heath, Jamie (Susie) Pulliam and Krystal (Kim Sizemore) Pulliam; great-grandchildren, Kaylie, Zoey, Jocelyn, Kennedy, Braelynn, Knox, Madilynn, Layla and baby Nash; sisters, Linda (Alan) Nelson, Debbie (Woody) Bentley and Sandy (Chet) Zieba; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Larry Pulliam; and sister, Sue Meyers.
Samuel’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses who assisted in his care, especially Cathy and Brenda. They are also deeply thankful for his sister, Linda Nelson, whose companionship and unwavering support were truly invaluable.
A graveside service to honor Samuel will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at 1:00pm at Highland Garden of Memories, 9800 Route 76, Belvidere, Illinois 61008. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to the family.
