Sam Mattis Obituary

Sam Mattis, 75, of Loves Park, departed this life peacefully on March 30, 2021 after a brief illness. Sam was born in Rockford on May 7, 1945 to Joseph and Genevieve (Pumilia) Mattis. He was a proud graduate of West High School class of 1964. Serving on the Class Reunion committee for many years. He was employed in the grocery business for over 45 years retiring from Hilander Foods. Sam was a lifelong Chicago Sports enthusiast. He loved watching the Cubs, Bears, and Bulls. Rarely missing a game. Supporting them no matter what their season looked like. He enjoyed playing golf as much as possible, and playing Bocce with his brother Nick, nephew Joe and cousin George. In his younger days he loved to host holiday parties.

Sam loved his family and leaves behind brother, Nick (Sharon); niece, Nicole (Brandon) Foster; nephew, Joseph Mattis; great-niece, Sophia Mattis; great-nephews, Dominic and Mattis Foster; special cousins, Mike and Sara Stapleton-Metairie, La; numerous cousins from Rockford, Madison, WI and Louisiana.

He was blessed to have good friends Dr. Mark and Margot Orlandini and family, S.C., Rick and Corkie Boenzi, and Joe and Donna Kowaleski-Rockford.

He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Genevieve Mattis; sister, Elizabeth Mattis; aunts and uncles, Ethel Pumilia, Mary Digiovanni Zammuto, Ted and Margaret Adcock, George Mattis, Sr. and Hank Mattis and cousins, Geraldine Giovingo and Siobhan Brumfield.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Anthony Hospital, P.A. Peterson and Heartland Hospice for their care and compassion in making sure all of Sam’s needs were met and provided excellent medical care.

Sam wanted everyone to remember him during his healthy and happy times and enjoying life with family and friends.

He requested a private family internment service only.
