Roy Lundstrom Obituary

Roy L. Lundstrom, 94, of Machesney Park, IL, passed away on February 5, 2025. He was born on September 4, 1931, to Willard and Merita (Fowler) Lundstrom.  He married Doris "Charlie" Bussell on December 3, 1955.  Dad divided his growing-up years between Loves Park, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. The stories he could tell about his travels on Route 66 across this great country would keep all of us entertained.

He served in the Air Force during the Korean War, spending most of his time stationed in Japan.  After returning to Rockford following his service, he went back to work at National Lock, where he met the love of his life. They had known each other for only six weeks before marrying. He later went to work at Chrysler at the beginning of the plant’s start and made many wonderful friends there before retiring in 1992.  He began collecting Jim Beam decanters in the early 1980s, traveling all over the country for conventions and finding many favorite pieces.

He is survived by his son, Willard (Endra) Lundstrom; daughter, Bonnie Mabrey; grandchildren, Diego and Merita; great-grandson, Ezra; children of his heart, Bruce (Tara) Lundstrom and Claire (Tom) James; a host of nieces and nephews, including his special niece, Cori Steele; and his sister, Carol Niday.  He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Craig; and brothers, Bernie, Jack, and Pete.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Medina Nursing Center for the exceptional care Dad received. The staff did an amazing job caring for him. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to OSF Hospice, R.N. Amy and R.N. Trinity for their compassionate care and support.

A funeral will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory - Mulford Chapel, 4311 N. Mulford Rd., Loves Park, IL, 61111, at 11:00 AM, with visitation starting at 10:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will immediately follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to VetsRoll (www.vetsroll.org), an organization that gave Dad the opportunity to attend their "Closure, Gratitude, Respect" trip in 2016, an experience he truly cherished.
