Robert "Bob" Winkelman, 92, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 26, 2025, at his home in Rockford, Illinois. Robert was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 16, 1932, the son of Edward and Anne Winkelman. Bob was proud of his roots, always making the distinction that while he lived in Rockford, he was "from Chicago."
Known by many names—Bobby, Pinch, Wink, Winky, Condo, S.O.B. (Sweet Ol' Bob), and most famously, Candyman—his countless nicknames were a reflection of his vibrant personality and his remarkable talent for making people laugh. A natural storyteller with an infectious sense of humor, he lit up every room and was the heart of every gathering.
For nearly 52 years, Robert was the devoted husband to his beloved bride, Sandra, who passed away in April 2025. They had two children together, Scott (deceased 1976) and Victoria. He lovingly doted on Sandra throughout their marriage and, in her time of need, he cared for her with unwavering dedication. His love was a cornerstone of his life, and their partnership set a beautiful example for all who knew them. In his teenage years and early twenties, Robert worked as a bricklayer and it was here that his grandson, Mason, got his namesake. He later became a successful realtor, a profession he truly enjoyed. Away from work, his passions included golf—a game he loved to play, watch, and even turn into a charitable cause with his golf outings. More than anything, he loved his family, and his care for them was a defining part of his character.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Victoria, and his grandchildren, Mason and Connor. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Winkelman; and brothers, Ed, Bill, Dick, and Jim.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Heartland Hospice and especially Natalie Parvin for her compassionate care and immense comfort.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Robert Winkelman's name as he felt passionate about the cause for cancer research.
