Richard Gordon Obituary

Richard O. Gordon, 80, passed away on April 5, 2026, after a brief illness.

Richard was born on September 14, 1945, in Albemarle County, Virginia, to James and Mary. From an early age, he had a strong work ethic and an unwavering ability to dream big – qualities that defined his life. He built a career in environmental services, working his way up from field personnel to the executive level. He was never too proud to roll up his sleeves and mentored countless employees throughout his career. During his long tenures at Safety-Kleen and Crystal Clean, he earned numerous awards recognizing his stellar performance and commitment. Even in retirement, Richard’s energy never slowed. He followed his love of the open road and adventure, driving long-haul routes across the country with Skypoint Transit and local routes with Pharmalogic Holdings.

Known for his big heart and even bigger personality, Richard brought joy to everyone he met. He had a gift for building friendships, striking up conversations with people he encountered throughout his day. A talented dancer and lover of R&B and blues music, he was the first to the dance floor and the life of every gathering. Richard could fix just about anything – a skill he joyfully shared with his children, always eager to teach, help, and support. He was a constant presence for friends, neighbors, and family, never hesitating to lend his time, talents, or encouragement to someone who needed it.

A true dreamer, Richard was always imagining new ways to use his skills to better the lives of those he loved. His optimism and dedication left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him.

Richard is remembered with love by his wife of 26 years, Diane. A guiding presence in their lives, he was a proud father and a cherished “Papa” to his grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Richard Gordon Jr., Vincent Gordon, and Kendra Kohnke; and his stepchildren, Ryan Corbett (Mandy) and Sara Ballard (David). He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Vincent Jr., Kallyn, Xander, Landon, Kayson, Vaeda, Wrenley, Brendan, Camryn, and Justin.  He is also survived by his siblings, Barbara Watson, Peggy Gordon, Michael Gordon, Graylin Gordon, and Walter Jackson. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Christine Wilson, James Gordon, and Luther Gordon.

Richard will be remembered for his infectious smile, motivating spirit, and ability to encourage everyone to focus on what truly matters in life. He was one in a million.
