Norma Lee Brandenburg, 89, of Roscoe, Illinois, passed away peacefully during prayer on Thursday, November 21, 2024, surrounded by family, her pastor, and his wife. She was born on March 29, 1935, to Glen and Anna (Bell) Akin. Norma and her older brother, Robert, grew up on their family farm in Madison County, Iowa. Norma graduated from Ames High School in 1953. She attended Iowa State University for one year and then decided to move to Des Moines, IA to work at Meridith Publishing. While living in Des Moines, she met Keith Brandenburg, who lived in the same apartment building. Keith quickly asked Norma out and they attended a Drake football game on their first date. Their romance blossomed, and they were engaged after only a few months. They were united in marriage on June 10, 1960.
Norma was a loving stay at home mother to Sheri, Diane, and Scott. Due to Keith's job, they relocated often, and she set up new households in Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin. She was a wonderful cook and baker, talented seamstress, and gardener. Norma's sweet demeanor and kindness made a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. She was a woman of faith and always found a church to attend with each move. She developed many close friendships within her church community and surrounding neighbors. Norma returned to the workforce after Scott was in high school doing data processing. Eventually, Keith and Norma purchased a cleaning business, Magic Wand. After retiring, they enjoyed camping and traveling across the states. Her favorite trip was taking their RV to Arizona with dear friends.
Norma is survived by three children, Sheri (Victor) Rios, Diane (Chris) McNeill, Scott (Jill); grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Trey, Morgan; great-grandchildren, Victoria, Addyson; and step-grandchildren, Sam, Mia, Ben, Rue. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Anna (Bell) Akin; brother, Robert; husband, Keith; grandchild, Nolan; step-son, Robert Adam Bergstadt.
The family extends special thanks to her supporting physicians and nursing staff at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center for always giving Norma thoughtful care. The family is also eternally grateful for the loving care and friendship provided by Donna. The family also greatly appreciates the guidance and care provided by Kristi and Jodi at Generations at Neighbors Nursing Home in Byron.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 12:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church, 5304 Charles Street, Rockford, IL 61108 with Pastor David Huffstutler officiating.
