Michael Edward Grilc, 79, of Roscoe, was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and friend to many. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter for those who knew him well.
Mike was born to Edward and Virginia Grilc in Princeton, Illinois on January 9, 1945 while his father was overseas during World War II. His early years were shaped by growing up in DePue, Illinois, a close-knit community where the values of family, kindness, and hard work were instilled in him. He went on to pursue his undergrad at Illinois State University and master’s at Northern Illinois University. His interest in political science and history eventually led to a long-term teaching career at Harlem High School. While there, he met the love of his life, Betty (Wirth) Grilc, whom he married on May 27, 1972, in Rockford, Illinois and they enjoyed 39 years of wedded bliss until her passing in 2011.
Mike cherished his family above all else, and his love for them was the guiding force in his life. As a father and grandfather, he poured his heart into his family, teaching his daughter and grandsons the values of integrity, kindness, and resilience. He leaves behind his loving daughter, Meghan Stiklestad; son-in-law, Brian Stiklestad; and two grandsons, Preston and Bentley Stiklestad, who were his pride and joy. To his family, he was not only a role model but also a constant source of laughter, wisdom, and comfort.
His passing leaves an irreplaceable void, yet his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him. His family takes comfort in knowing he is reunited with his beloved wife, Betty, and his parents, Virginia and Edward, and that his legacy of love and kindness will live on through them.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in DePue, Illinois on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to University of Wisconsin’s Carbone Cancer Center or Agrace Hospice Care.
