Merlin “Toby” R. Payne, 92, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away following a sudden illness on May 16, 2026. Born on June 16, 1933, in Neillsville, Wisconsin, he was the son of Wesley and Verna Payne. Toby lived a long and active life rooted in friendship and the simple joys that meant the most to him.
Toby attended local schools and graduated from Neillsville High School. Following graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a member of the 187th Airborne. His years of service remained an important part of his life, and he carried that sense of dedication and resilience with him throughout the years.
After returning home, Toby began a long career at the Chrysler Plant in Belvidere, Illinois, where he worked faithfully for 30 years until his retirement.
Outside of work, Toby truly enjoyed the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were lifelong passions that brought him peace and happiness through every season of life. He also loved golfing and remained active well into his later years — even playing his final 18 holes just a week before his passing. Toby enjoyed the camaraderie of his bowling league and treasured the friendships he built over the years. Whether sharing stories, laughing with friends, or simply enjoying good company, relationships meant a great deal to him.
At home, Toby took exceptional pride in caring for his yard and faithfully planted a garden each year. He appreciated life’s simple routines and found joy in staying busy, working outdoors.
He is survived by his daughter, Heather (Charles) Parrovechio; his beloved grandson, Cade Parrovechio, who brought him tremendous pride and joy; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends whose lives were touched by his presence.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Eunice Humke and Norma Nelson; and his brothers, Myron and Earl Payne.
Toby’s family would especially like to acknowledge his nephew, Jimmy Tibbett, for the years of companionship, friendship, and support he so generously provided. His care and presence meant more than words can express.
Cremation rites will be accorded. A celebration of Toby’s life will be held at a later date.
