Max Clevenger Obituary

Max Leroy Clevenger, age 84, succumbed to heart failure on March 31, 2020 in Mesa, AZ.

Max was born in Grinnell, IA, to Ambrose and Therma Clevenger, the third of five brothers. He married Jeanice Winnike in 1957 and raised four children in Rockford, IL. In 1965, Max was accepted into the Illinois State Police, and after 26+ years of service he retired at the rank of Master Sergeant.

Max was a social, active man and enjoyed nearly 30 years of retirement with Jeanice, splitting their time between homes in Mesa, AZ, and Blackhawk Campgrounds in Milton, WI. He was a fishing buddy, a golfing partner and an ocean cruise enthusiast. Max drove older neighbors to medical appointments, helped campground friends build deck and mowed neighbor’s lawns while they were away. He was beloved by his grandchildren, whom he entertained with funny faces, golf cart rides and fishing for bluegills off the dock. Max also loved chatting and laughing with his friends at the pool, around a campfire, or at 4pm lawn chair happy hour.

Max is survived by his wife, Jeanice; his son, Steve; his daughter, Kathy (Pete Conklin); his daughter, Lisa Campbell (Scott); and his son, Dan; as well as grandchildren, Nathan, Mark Campbell, Aaron, Adam Campbell, Grant Conklin, Kayla, and Kendra; and his brothers, Bob and Bill. He is preceded in death by his mother, Therma; his father, Ambrose; and brothers Alvin and John.

Due to the unfortunate timing (COVID-19 quarantine) of Max’s passing, a funeral date is to be announced. Updates will be posted when a firm date is established.
