Mary Blunt Obituary

Mary Catherine (Guffey) Blunt, 98, of Rockford, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at Presence St. Anne Center. She was born January 1, 1922, in Freeport, IL, the daughter of Joseph and Mabel (Bradley) Guffey. She married Harold Blunt October 29, 1941, at St. James Cathedral in Rockford, in a double wedding alongside her twin sister, Margaret and her husband, Russell (Bud) Haughton. Mary enjoyed playing croquet, baking, playing cards, watching baseball–especially the Chicago Cubs, and spending time with friends and family.

After completing 8th grade, Mary and her twin sister left home to work as live-in nannies and housekeepers. In 1939, she moved to Rockford and worked at Andrews Wire Works, Washburn Company and Testors Corp. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth (Kay) Blunt of Lakeland, FL; daughter, Victoria (Richard) Oakley of Rockford; grandchildren, Steven (Pam) Reed of Denver, CO, Sheri Reed of Chicago, IL, Christy (Tim) Harvey of Pottsboro, TX, Trina (Terry) Severson of Tell City, IN, Lori (Dan) Finnegan of Centennial, CO, Kris (Tommy) Ashton of Charlston, IL, Troy Oakley of Rockford, Robyn Blunt of Freeport, IL, and Ashley (Eric) Ignatowski of Decateur, IL; a sister, Irene Krieger of Las Vegas, NV; brothers, Lester Guffey of Loves Park, IL and Joseph Guffey Jr. of Madison, WI; and great-grandchildren, Miranda and Kristen Reed, Kayla and Kimberly Thomas, Emma and Amani Severson, Emerson Finnegan, Jasey Rae Ignatowski, Ellie Wright, Gage Trueblood, Gunner Trueblood, Zakera Haygood and Michael, Corderral and Makyla Jackson, Amber Bartley and Michael Wheeler; and several great-great-grandchildren. 

Mary is predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Harold; her daughter, Patricia Reed; her parents, Joseph and Mabel Guffey; brothers, John (Gus) Guffey, William Guffey, Leo Guffey; and sisters, Marge Haughton and Mildred Williams.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Henry T. Barnhart, MD for his care and support through OSF Hospice.

Private graveside services will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Winnebago. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family to be used in Mary’s name at a later date.
