Mark Pickett Obituary

Mark Kevin Pickett was born August 23, 1955 and died April 15, 2023. He is survived by his wife, Jane; mother, Leona; brother, Chris; sister-in-law, Janet; nephew, Tim; step-niece, Caitlin; brothers-in-law, Carlos and Gavin; sister in-law, Julie; and nephew, Keith. He was preceded in death by his father, George Robert Pickett (2007).

One of Mark’s favorite childhood memories was the six-week long camping trip his family took in 1966. His father modified a van into a camper and the family drove to Alaska on the Al-Can Highway. Mark fondly reflected on bringing a coaster wagon full of popcorn to an orphanage on Kodiak Island.

Mark graduated from Auburn High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1977-1983 as a sonar technician on submarines. Mark recalled his service with affection, telling stories of what it was like to live in such a close community for months at a time. He recalled the fun the crew had surfacing offshore, posting a shark watch, and going for a swim.

Mark married Jane, the love of his life and his devoted partner, on January 5, 1980. They honeymooned in Charleston, South Carolina. Mark often spoke of his great good fortune to meet and marry such a wonderful woman.

Mark completed three Associate of Arts degrees at Rock Valley College: one in science, one in electronics, and one computer science. He was proud of his educational accomplishments. Mark worked as an electronics technician at several locations. He spent 19 years working for Global Display Solutions and retired in October, 2021.

Mark and Jane loved living on their small farm, driving a tractor and growing and bailing hay for their beloved horses, Sara and Silk. The couple shared their lives with many rescue dogs and cats. They enjoyed being a host family for college students from Northern Ireland.

Quick witted and humorous, Mark was a memorable character. He always had a story to tell-sometimes at great length. Mark is fondly remembered as a kind and gentle man who could fix just about anything.

Mark was diagnosed with cancer in March, 2022. Throughout his battle with cancer, Mark maintained an uncomplaining and positive attitude. His family and friends are grateful for his love of life, his courage and his joyful spirit. Mark is a blessing to all who remember him.

A Celebration of Life is planned for this summer.  Please check back to this website for details as they become available.
