Marjorie “Marge” Gyllenswan, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2025, at the age of 81 in Rockford, IL. Born on May 6, 1943, to William and Ruby Newkirk, Marge spent her entire life in Rockford, where she built a lifetime of cherished memories. She graduated from West High School in 1961 and, shortly after, married the love of her life, Gary Gyllenswan, on June 24, 1961, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Together, they shared nearly 64 wonderful years of marriage, raising their two sons, Jeffery and Michael.
Marge was a passionate sports fan, fiercely loyal to her Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears—even through the tough seasons. She never missed a game and was a true die-hard supporter. Her greatest joy, however, was being there for her family. She attended every sporting event her sons played in—football, basketball, wrestling, and baseball—cheering them on as their biggest supporter. When her grandchildren, Savanna Grace Gyllenswan and Max Gyllenswan, came along, she found new joy in watching them grow, attending every school event and game, and playing endless games with them when they were little. She was incredibly proud of the young adults they were becoming.
Beyond her love for family and sports, Marge found happiness in life’s simple pleasures— watching birds from her porch, tending to her flowers, and spending time with her many friends. She had a heart of gold and would do anything for those she loved.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Gary; her two sons, Jeffery Gyllenswan and Michael (Lori) Gyllenswan; her cherished grandchildren, Savanna and Max Gyllenswan; and her beloved pup, Gracie. She also leaves behind her brothers, Dick and Tom Newkirk; as well as her brother-in-law, Tom (Mary) Gyllenswan; and many treasured nieces and nephews. Marge was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ruby Newkirk; her sisters, Judy, Salley and Jeanette; her brothers, Bob and Ron; and her sister-in-law, Beverly.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date to honor Marge’s incredible life and the love she shared with all who knew her.
