Marilyn Johnson Obituary

Marilyn Jean Johnson, 91, of Loves Park, IL, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.  Born at her family home on August 1, 1934, in Freeport, IL, Marilyn was the daughter of William and Opal (Rizner) Hildebrandt. She proudly graduated from Harlem High School, Class of 1952.

Shortly after graduation, Marilyn met her future husband, Gerald "Jerry" Johnson, at a bowling alley—a meeting that sparked a love story that would last a lifetime. Together they shared 72 beautiful years of marriage, building a life rooted in devotion, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. Jerry was not only her husband, but her constant companion, her teammate, and her greatest love.  Her love was endless, and extended to her children, grandchildren, and all those who knew her.

Together, Marilyn poured her boundless energy and heart into raising three children: Crystal Johnson, Mary Brooks, and Chip Johnson.  Later in life, she added one more very important member to the family—her beloved miniature schnauzer, Bruno, who happily soaked up her affection.

Marilyn worked over the years at Greenlee Tool (with her father), Rockford Public Library and Swedish American Hospital, always bringing warmth and kindness wherever she went.

After retiring, Marilyn could often be found at Harlem High alumni get togethers, Red Feather Club gatherings, listening to her favorite Alan Jackson songs, proudly (and faithfully) cheering on the Chicago Bulls and Bears, visiting friends, attending and supporting children and grandchildren events, or chatting on the phone with friends and family near and far—sometimes for hours, and always with kind words to share.

She treasured her lifelong friendships, especially her special bond with Jeane Shallenberger, and she absolutely adored her grandchildren and their spouses: Cody Warner, Callie Warner, Cassidy Warner, Autumn (Jake) Dorris, Bayley (Danny) Hotson & Aleksandra Johnson.

Marilyn’s love, humor, and vibrant spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
