Obituary

LEROY MYLAND GRANDE, 94, of Baileyville, IL went to his heavenly home after a brief illness on May 19, 2022. He was born April 21, 1928 in Sheboygan, WI, the son of Arthur and Myrtle (Jorgenson) Grande. He was educated in Milwaukee schools until his family moved to Forreston, IL in 1943, where he graduated in 1945. LeRoy married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Abels, on June 17, 1950 at the Forreston United Methodist Church. LeRoy held several offices at that church until he and Virginia moved to Rockford in July 1991, where they became members of Christ United Methodist Church. LeRoy was drafted into the Army in March 1952, serving in Korea in the signal corps. Later he and Virginia were blessed with the arrival of their daughters Lisa and Gina, and through the years they shared great times with family and friends and vacations around the U.S. He was a beloved father, always having time to play games and attend school events and piano recitals. His family knew of his strong Christian faith. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved talking and joking with family, friends and strangers.

LeRoy was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk in 1944 and became Postmaster in October 1963. He retired after 39 years of service. LeRoy was a member of the National Association of Postmasters and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He joined the Forreston American Legion Post 308 in 1955 and was a member of the Oregon, IL VFW.

LeRoy enjoyed gardening, singalongs, refinishing antique furniture, traveling and attending movies and concerts. He and friend Paul Mueller went downhill skiing in the Rocky Mountains and at ski resorts and attended the Washington State International Kite Festival at Long Beach, WA. LeRoy, Virginia and their family had great summertime visits to Paul’s property near Glacier Park, MT.

LeRoy is survived by his daughters, Lisa (Steve) Miller and Gina (Scott) Sallstrom; grandchildren, David (Elena Rodriguez and great-grandson Maxx) Miller; Caitlin (and great-granddaughter Ellie Hoster); sister-in-law, Mary (Art) Grande; and several nieces and nephews.
