Larry Barr Obituary

Lawrence “Larry” Oliver Barr, 82, of Roscoe, IL, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2024. Born on September 9, 1942, to Kenneth and Ruby (Hutmacher) Barr in Freeport, Larry grew up in the Orangeville, IL area, where he attended the local school district. On September 23, 1962, he married Karen McGrew in Rock Grove, IL, and together they raised a loving family.

Larry spent many years driving a stock truck in Orangeville before retiring from Amerock in Rockford. After retirement, he grew restless with his free time and took on a few years of work with Winnebago County. Throughout his life, Larry embraced every opportunity to stay active and enjoy the things he loved most.

A true lover of classic cars, Larry enjoyed going to car shows and admiring their beauty. He could often be found watching a good Western movie. He was a passionate Green Bay Packers fan and cherished spending time with his grandchildren, watching the daily news, and indulging in true crime shows. Larry’s affection for family pets Bentley and Cookie brought him great comfort, as did his simple pleasures: a hearty bowl of chili, a juicy hamburger with mustard and onions, fresh cauliflower, and homemade cheesecake. He had a love for quality boots and lived his life with a sense of ease and contentment.

Larry is survived by his children, William (Jennie) Barr and Kellie (Roel) Benavides; grandchildren, Larry, Alex, Zachary, Preston, Teeah, Michael, Taylor, Ethan, Benjamin, Xavier, Amelia, and Isabel; great-grandchildren, Dwayne, Natane, Jaxon, Evelyn, Anika, Eleanor, Melanie, River, Raelynn, Addilynn, Carter, Kallen, and Avarie; siblings, Margie (Harlan) Rigney, Carol (John) Foutch, Lynn (Pat) Barr, Betty (Clifford) Rabe, and Landis (Darlene) Barr.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; son, Kenneth Barr; brothers, Leroy and Leslie; parents, Kenneth and Ruby Barr.

Larry’s family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at PA Peterson at the Citadel Nursing Home, especially those in the Memory Care unit, as well as Northern Illinois Hospice, for their compassionate care and support during Larry’s final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Larry’s name to Northern Illinois Hospice.
