Helen Teter Obituary

Helen Cecilia Newton Teter died peacefully at home on March 11, 2024 in Rockford, IL. She was 93. Born August 29, 1930 in Mead, Colorado to James Elmer Newton and Laura Cecilia (Dreier) Newton, Helen was the eighth of 20 children. She graduated from Mead High School in 1948. Though she earned a scholarship to college, she chose to support her family and work in Longmont with Dr. M.W. Cooke as his assistant. In 1955, she joined United Airlines as a stewardess, flying out of Denver, Hawaii, and Newark. She was promoted to flight attendant instructor in Cheyenne, WY in 1956, where she developed curricula, instruction materials, and manuals. She quickly advanced, and finished her career at United as a supervisor of stewardess instruction at the Executive Center near Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport. She met David Kenneth Teter at United, and they married in 1963. As was the norm for the era, she was forced to retire from United in 1964 when she became pregnant. They had their daughters, Catherine, in 1964, and Caroline in 1965. Helen was a pioneer. She started a Lamaze chapter before it became popular, grew parent participation in the local PTA, and began the parenting class, “Children: The Challenge.” She enjoyed her various crafts, and sewed beautifully. She developed a love for genealogy and passion for preserving the Newton-Dreier family history and traditions. It was her joy to share her photos and discoveries at reunions and other occasions. Her family-famous address list was part directory, part family historical document, marking all the important family events and vital statistics. She loved connecting with her siblings, nieces and nephews through the annual updates. The multi-generational family connections are her legacy.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, David Teter; her parents, James and Laura Newton; her brothers, Orbin, Raymond, Thomas, Robert, Jack, Gerald, Richard, Roland, David, and Forrest, and  her sisters, Eunice, Rosemary, Roberta, Patricia, Martha, Kathleen, and Maureen. She is survived by her brothers, Ronald and Marcus Newton; her daughters Catherine Zapata and Caroline Teter, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on June 19, 2024 at 10:30 AM in Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Mead, IL.
