Gustavo "Gus" SantaOlalla Obituary

Gustavo “Gus” SantaOlalla, age 62, passed away at home on January 20, 2026, surrounded by love, leaving behind a life defined not just by hard work and dedication, but by deep love, laughter, and the people who mattered most to him.

Born in Mexico City, Mexico, Gus emigrated to the United States in 1970, carrying with him a quiet strength and determination that would guide the rest of his life. He built his life on perseverance, integrity, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to family. In 1983, he met Josephine “Pina” Barone, and from that moment on, everything changed. They married in 1987 and began a partnership rooted in love, respect, and devotion that would span more than half their lives together. In 1989, they welcomed their only child, Jackie, completing the family that became the center of Gus’s world.

Gus and Pina created a lifetime of memories together, sharing their love of travel, food, laughter, and time with family and friends. They celebrated countless anniversaries, some quietly at home and others filled with adventure in places like Mexico, New Orleans, a Caribbean cruise, and most recently while fulfilling a lifelong dream of exploring Italy together in 2023. These moments tell the story of a life truly lived, one filled with joy, incredible meals, excellent wine, and above all, the best company.

A devoted sports fan, Gus proudly cheered for his Chicago teams, the Cubs, the Bears, and, like so many in the 1990s, the legendary Chicago Bulls led by Michael Jordan. Yet nothing brought him greater pride than watching his daughter, Jackie, play softball. Alongside Pina, he attended every game, home or away, through rain, snow, freezing cold, scorching heat and humidity, and everything in between. That same unwavering support continued as he made every effort to attend games to watch Jackie coach at East High School. While he loved watching sports, golf was the game he loved to play, spending countless early mornings on the course with his brother Gabe and close friends.

Gus dedicated most of his professional life to the automotive industry, where he was known for his honesty, strong work ethic, and genuine care for the people around him. He began his career as a Service Advisor at Lou Bachrodt Auto Mall in Cherry Valley, Illinois, spending 20 years building trusted relationships with customers and coworkers alike. He later continued his career at Jack Wolf Auto in Belvidere, bringing the same pride, dedication, and warmth to every interaction. The teams at both Lou Bachrodt and Jack Wolf reflected the values Gus believed in: kindness, respect, and a true sense of family. The people he worked beside became more than coworkers. They became friends and family who stayed with him, supported him, and loved him until the very end. Gus touched countless lives with his generosity, humor, and loyalty, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

He concluded his long career at Kunes GMC of Belvidere, formerly Jack Wolf Auto in Belvidere, where he worked as a Service Advisor until his passing. Throughout his career, Gus received countless awards as Service Advisor of the Month and Year. These honors reflected not just his expertise, but his reliability, integrity, and the trust he earned every day. His work ethic was tireless, his loyalty unmatched, and his presence truly irreplaceable. Gus was preceded in death by his mother, Araceli SantaOlalla, who passed in August 2025; his grandparents; and his father-in-law, Joseph Barone, who passed in May 2005.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Pina SantaOlalla; his daughter, Jackie Hennelly; son-in-law, Taylor Hennelly; and his cherished granddaughters, Adalynn and Augustina Hennelly, who were a constant source of pride and joy. He is also survived by his father, Gustavo SantaOlalla Sr.; siblings, Aracely Belmontes (Antonio Belmontes) and Gabe SantaOlalla (Angie SantaOlalla); his mother-in-law, Amelia Barone; and many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, and extended family who loved him deeply.

It was this love, steady, constant, and unwavering, that became Gus’s greatest strength. Diagnosed with Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer (ATC) in January 2020, an exceptionally aggressive disease, Gus defied every expectation, surviving six years beyond diagnosis, an outcome few ever see. Through it all, he never lost himself. His will to fight came from his devotion to his family, his desire to keep showing up, and his determination to keep living. He faced an unfair hand with grace, humility, and quiet courage, never giving up and never losing sight of what mattered most. He continued to provide, to make memories, and to live fully, even when it was hard. He drew immense strength from the unwavering love and support of his family, and from the tireless dedication, expertise, and care of his doctors, nurses, and medical teams and Heartland Hospice whose skill and commitment gave him more time and comfort with the people he loved and allowed him to keep living fully for as long as possible.

Gus will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, generous heart, and the fierce love and protection he had for his family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the memories he created, and the family he treasured above all else.

Memorial service will be at 4:00pm with a Visitation from 2:00pm until the service on Sunday, January 25, 2026 in Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory-Mulford Chapel, 4311 N. Mulford Road, Loves Park, IL 61111.
