Gregory Maurer Obituary

Gregory Wayne Maurer, 62, of Stillman Valley, IL, died peacefully Sunday, October 20, 2024 surrounded by his family after a brief battle with AML leukemia.  Married on May 8, 1982 to the love of his life, Laurie Jo Rathke. Greg is survived by Laurie and their two beautiful daughters, Nicole (Micheal) King and Michele Hailey. He is also survived by his father, Jerry; brothers, Gary (Terri) Maurer and Kevin (Kristin) Maurer; as well as grandkids, Ava, Benjamin, Isla and Cora King, and Adelaide and Ezekiel Hailey. Greg, as you would expect, had a group of admiring sisters-in-law; nephews; nieces and cousins from the Carolinas to Colorado. He was proceeded in death and reunited in heaven by his mom, Erlene Hall Maurer; mother-in-law, Karen Rathke; and brothers-in-law, Boyd Rathke and Timothy Johnson.

Greg was an affectionate, loyal and dedicated family leader and man of the community. Greg lived his life like no other – worked hard, played hard and loved hard. He was always working on so many projects from cars to boats to ATV’s, always learning, always teaching. His career began at a place called Helen’s Gardens and included a Shell station, a Bonanza restaurant, Benson Pump, his own pool business and Sonco, prior to his real estate career. He was a successful entrepreneur in the real estate business. Greg’s ability and love of relationships was perfect for the business and his incredible success shows just that. His integrity and professionalism earned him immense respect in the Rockford community.

Greg’s happiest moments were not confined to one or two types of situations, but any with family and friends on the water, by himself or with others in a garage, and really anywhere with people who enjoyed living an active life. He was never one to sit idly unless it was around a campfire just steps from his boat with the people he loved and appreciated. He taught so many people so many things and was an awesome teacher of what he had learned by trials or by studying. He taught us how to live life to the fullest and always at speed. Greg did more in one lifetime than most people do in five. Greg will forever be a part of so many hearts and minds. He will be missed by all who knew him.
