Geraldine “Gerry” L. Detra

Geraldine “Gerry” L. Detra, 92, of Loves Park, IL, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.  She was born on October 22, 1933, in Springfield, MN,  the daughter of Emil and Lottie (Bump) Lungstrom. Her family moved frequently during her childhood, following farming opportunities throughout the Midwest. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1951, where she was proudly crowned Prom Queen.  On January 15, 1955, Gerry married the love of her life, Charles H. Detra, in Belvidere, IL. They shared 57 wonderful years together before his passing on January 4, 2013.

Gerry worked as a bookkeeper for many years at PNC Bank in Loves Park. She was a devoted member of Grace Lutheran Church, where she actively participated in Grace Circle.  In her free time, Gerry enjoyed embroidering, playing bingo, and trying her luck with gambling and slot machines. She will be remembered for her warmth, humor, and love for her family.

She is survived by her children, Sue (Ron) Northrup of Machesney Park, IL; Bonnie Cassata of Machesney Park, IL; and Mike (Karen) Detra of South Beloit, IL; her grandchildren, Mike Cassata, Mark Cassata, Kyle Northrup, and Jessica O’Brien; and her great-granddaughter, Camille Cassata. She is also survived by her siblings, Evelyn Sanford of Texas and Melvin Lungstrom of Loves Park, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Gerry was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; and son-in-law, Frank Cassata.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 10, 2025 in Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory-Loves Park Chapel, 4311 N. Mulford Road, Loves Park, IL 61111.  Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Machesney Park, IL.
