Gerald Thomas Konitski, 84, of Machesney Park, IL passed away peacefully at home on December 17, 2024. Gerald was born on February 10, 1940, to his parents, Louis and Dorothy Konitski. He attended Harlem Schools, but cut his education short to help support his parents.
Gerald married the love of his life, Nancy Sadewater on December 15, 1962, and together shared 58 years of marriage. Gerald was employed by Rockford Products and retired in 2000.
Gerald was a man of many talents. Known for his extraordinary mechanical skills, there was nothing he couldn’t fix. A skilled machinist by trade, he had a natural gift for working with his hands and could restore or repair anything that came his way. His love for all things automotive was evident throughout his life. A proud owner and racer of a 1958 Corvette, he could often be found at Byron Dragway in the 1970s, revving up the engine of his prized car and competing in drag races. His passion for hot rods and classic cars was matched only by his deep love of NASCAR, a sport he followed fervently throughout his life. His collection of vintage Hot Rods, each one a testament to his mechanical genius, was a source of pride and joy. Even beyond his cars, he was a man of remarkable resilience and kindness.
At the age of 9, Gerald faced a life-threatening battle with Hepatitis A. Doctors feared he wouldn't survive, but his strength and determination proved them wrong. He fought through that challenge, emerging as a true testament to the power of perseverance. This early brush with adversity shaped his character and gave him the drive to build a happy and productive life, filled with love, hard work, and a commitment to those he held dear.
Though he could be tough on the outside, those who knew him best understood his gentle heart. His kindness, loyalty, and willingness to help others, no matter the circumstances, made him a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
A special thanks to Dr. Quadry and Dr. Hollister at Javon Bae Hospital, and to Mercy Health at Home Hospice, Lisa, Dawn, Susan, Mitch, Tiffany, and Cathy.
