DeWayne M. Swanson, 76, of Rockford passed away December 11, 2024 after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend. He was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and sought to follow His ways in every area of his life.
DeWayne will be known for his loving-kindness, generous spirit, devotion, loyalty, engaging conversations, and his genuine love for Jesus Christ, his family, and his church. DeWayne was married to the love of his life, Gail, for 54 years. His unending devotion and love for her was evident until the day he passed away, relying on her for care and support. Throughout their 54 years of marriage, they experienced many joys and sorrows, which only drew them closer together. He was also a devoted father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time and creating memories with his children and grandchildren. They were truly his pride and joy, and he never grew tired of talking about them.
DeWayne was the oldest of eight children. He loved his brothers and sisters and took every opportunity he had to spend time with them. The most memorable times were spent during the many picnics on the family farm in Stillman Valley, Christmas Eve gatherings, vacationing at Lake Norfolk in Mt. Home, Arkansas, trips to Silver Dollar City for their annual southern gospel picnics, and the occasional pop-in at the family duplex.
DeWayne spent almost the majority of his professional career working in the grocery business beginning at age 16 at Jewel on Auburn St. in Rockford. After a brief two year stint in the Army, he held several positions and worked at various businesses during his 50+ year career. Through the years, he made several friends and always enjoyed “talking shop.” He took pride in the way he managed his stores and treated his employees.
DeWayne loved a clean house, a tidy yard, early morning Bible reading and prayer time, southern gospel music, Chicago sports (except the White Sox), a crisply ironed dress shirt, and spending time with his close personal friends Al and Esther Gutierrez. His death will leave a void that will never be filled. He is now free of his daily pain and suffering and is basking in the presence of his dear Savior Jesus Christ.
DeWayne is survived by his wife of 54 years, Audrey Gail Swanson; sons, Jeremy Swanson (Michelle), Jeff Swanson (Tracy); grandchildren Maddie, Nathan, Emma, Audrey and Owen Swanson; sisters, Cindie Trieber (Jack), Vennie Strouf (Mike); brothers, Rich Swanson (Pat), Kelvin Swanson (Sherrie), Doug Swanson (Terri), Mark Swanson (Regina), Verlyn Swanson (Beth), and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his mother, Geraldine Swanson; father, Melvin Swanson; step-mother, Charlene Swanson, and beloved daughter, Jennifer Swanson.
Service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 21, 2024 in Berean Baptist Church, 5626 Safford Rd. Rockford, IL with a visitation from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will be in Willwood Burial Park. There will be a luncheon following the burial at Berean Baptist Church.
