It is with deep sadness that we announce David John Backer, of Rockford, a dedicated entrepreneur, cherished partner, and beloved friend, passed away suddenly on July 5, 2026 at the age of 63. He was born in Rockford, Illinois, on January 18, 1962, to Thomas and Marilyn (Weller) Backer.
David was a man of immense drive, integrity, and vision. Over fifteen years ago, he co-founded Radon Reduction Technologies, a company he poured his heart and soul into building from the ground up. Alongside his trusted business partner and friend, Tom Birkett, David grew the business into a respected leader in the industry, dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of countless families and communities. His work ethic was matched only by his commitment to honesty and excellence, leaving behind a professional legacy that will not soon be forgotten.
Beyond his professional achievements, David was known for his sharp wit and generous spirit. He approached life with a sense of purpose and a genuine kindness that touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by sisters, Jill Stein, Julie Browne, and Tamarra Brown; stepson, Cole (Ashley) Marsh and their children, Dayton, Heaven, Warren, and Stella; beloved niece, Angel (DJ) Cruze and their son, Lucas; as well as his business partner, Tom Birkett; and a wide circle of deeply devoted friends and colleagues. He was predeceased in death by his parents.
A visitation for David will take place on Thursday, July 16, from 4:00 to 6:00pm at Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory-Mulford Chapel, 4311 N. Mulford Road, Loves Park, IL 61111.
Gathering of family and friends will take place after the visitation at Souse's Lounge, 5855 Forest Hills Rd., Rockford, IL 61114.
The true success of a man is measured by the lives he touched and the legacy of safety and care he left behind.
David's presence will be profoundly missed, but his impact will live on through the company he built and the lives he bettered.
