Catherine "Cathy" Elizabeth Engstrom Adams, 85, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 after a lengthy illness. Born January 8, 1936 to Folke and Ruby Engstrom. A lifelong Rockford resident, she taught in the Rockford Public Schools, retiring in 1999. She loved volunteering at On the Waterfront, eventually becoming the coordinator for all the volunteers. She was an integral part of the IREAD program getting established in RPS 205 and enjoyed spending time with the children in the program, especially playing the Cat in the Hat. She stayed active in the REA-R during her retirement.
She is survived by her children, Douglas (Mary) Adams of Rockford, Dennis (Caroline) Adams of Germany and Linda (Dave) Novak of Rockford; grandsons, Alan, Bryan, Anthony and Aaron; sister, Karin Engstrom of Seattle, WA; brother, Robert (Cathleen) of Enosburg Falls, VT and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband, Lawrence "Larry"; parents and brother and sister-in-law.
A special Thanks to her “Visiting Angels” and staff at Siena and to Dr. Einhorn and staff at Swedish American Cancer Center, as well as Northern Illinois Hospice who helped her in her final days.
Her body has been donated to science to help medical students advance in their studies. No services are planned at this time. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Rock River Valley Blood Center.
