Alex “Al” Keller, 81, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away on April 9, 2026.
Al was born on June 22, 1944, in Germany, to Konstanty and Eugenia (Manchuk) Keller. As a young boy, he came to the United States with his family, and Rockford quickly became the place he would call home. He later graduated from East Rockford High School, beginning a life rooted in community, service, and strong connections.
Al met the love of his life, Bonnie Beckman, at Maggie’s Pub in Rockford—a chance meeting that grew into a lasting and devoted marriage. Together, they built a life centered on love, laughter, and unwavering partnership.
He proudly served the City of Rockford as a firefighter for 31 years, dedicating himself to protecting others with courage and commitment until his retirement in 1997. His work was more than a career—it was a reflection of his character and his deep sense of duty.
Outside of his service, Al found joy in the outdoors. He loved hunting, skiing, and fishing, and especially cherished the time he spent with family and friends. Whether sharing stories, laughter, or quiet moments, he made those around him feel valued and welcome.
Al will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the lives he touched and the love he shared.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to their family and friends for the kindness, support, and compassion shown during this difficult time.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Keller; children, Lisa Keller and Lana Aronofsky; grandchild, Martin Aronofsky; sister, Ala Gahlbeck; nieces and nephews, Alan and Lorinda Gahlbeck, and Gary Beckman. Preceded in death by his parents, Konstanty and Eugenia Keller, and brothers, Romic and Walter Keller.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 16th, 2026, at Honquest Family Funeral Home, 4311 N. Mulford Rd., Loves Park, IL, 61111, at 11:00 AM, with a visitation starting at 9:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will immediately follow at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to his family to help cover the cost of a headstone.
