Marie Conner Obituary

Marie "Tootie" "Grandma Re" Conner was born on February 20, 1931 in Beloit, WI to the late Inga and Sverre Johnson. She was the youngest of 7 and was preceded in death by all of her siblings; Mabel Partridge (Glen), Roy Johnson (Marie), Sigrid Fawcett (Chuck), Nellie Vandeman (George), Thelma Debock (Ernie) and Leonard Johnson (Peg). She was raised Seventh-day Adventist; her Christian faith and love of God showed throughout her beautiful life. She had an incredible zest for life and loved dancing, singing and laughing. From a very young age she realized the importance of family and friends. She passed away peacefully at home on December 10, 2018 at the age of 87.

Marie worked in the cafeteria at Guilford High School for 16-1/2 years, cleaned houses and spent weekends working at the doughnut shop/laundromat before retiring. Her family always joked that she worked so hard to pay for all her Christmas shopping. Christmas was always her favorite holiday because her family, near and far, would be together and family was always the most important part of life to her. She loved to hand out all her presents one at a time, so the Christmas holiday would not come to an end quickly. When her health started declining and she was worried she wouldn’t make it to Christmas, she made sure all the gifts were wrapped and cards addressed and stamped with detailed instructions about when to mail them so they would arrive on time.

Marie married Richard Conner at the Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS and divorced years later. They had five children, Robin, Dan, Christi, John and Shelly. She is preceded in death by two of her children, Robin and Dan.  Marie had many dear friends throughout her life, including a few of her dearest, Eleanor Thorpe and Kathy Puckett. She truly enjoyed her monthly gatherings with her retired school girls and birthday club friends. She outlived almost all of her friends with her strong Scandinavian viking genes.

Marie’s family meant the world to her. Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children, Christi Conner of Rockford, IL, John Conner of Rockford, IL, Shelly Sanches (Bob) of Scottsdale, AZ; her grandchildren, Amy Daniel-Moser (Rudy) of Chicago, IL, Mindy Beard (Tyler) of Rockton, IL, Teddy Teske of Los Angeles, CA, Paige Sanches of Scottsdale, AZ and Brooke Sanches of Scottsdale, AZ; great-grandchildren, Taylor Beard of Rockton, IL and Evander Moser of Chicago, IL.

Marie lived with Christi for the past 10 years and they had so much fun together as roommates and dear friends, a special bond beyond just mother-daughter. JMK Nippons lost a very special customer. Special thanks to those that helped Christi Conner care for her mom in the last few months of her beautiful life: Gregg and Donna Thorpe, Sandy Thorpe, Sally Christie (Partridge), and Debbie Beard.
