John Mullen Obituary

John D. Mullen, 80, of Rockford passed away Thursday, June 21, 2018. John was born October 21, 1937 in Rockford. John lived in the west end of Rockford all his life with his wife, Joann of 60 plus married years. They married September 7, 1957 in Rockford. He never had a desire to live anywhere else. John graduated from West High School, Class of 1955. In later years, he attended many classes at Rock Valley College. He worked for Barber Colman Company for 27 years performing inspection and quality control engineering duties. At Sunstrand, he was an inspection foreman for 4 years and a service sales representative for 3 years. John also was employed by Amistar for 11 years as the performing assistant manager and quality control duties. He and Joann were active in the Ellen Stiles School PTA for several years while their children were attending school and when the neighborhood school concept existed. He was very proud of the school and of his participation. John was a scoutmaster and troop commission of Boy Scout Troop 90 for 10 years. John also coached youth programs in baseball and basketball at Northwest Community Center in the 1970s. Most recently he coached girl’s softball in Pecatonica and Winnebago. He was a volunteer for the Swim-N-More program at the Millennium Center building. John had many hobbies which included gardening, wood-working, wine-making and euchre playing. Joann accused him of being a junk collector. He especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting and the outdoors. Most of his life, John played softball and basketball. He and Joann enjoyed watching their grandchildren’s sporting events. He would often be seen at David’s softball games. John was very proud of his active involvement with the National Right to Work Committee and Citizens Against Government Waste. He was an active member of the National Right to Work Committee since 1977 and a charter member of Citizens Against Government Waste. John also was a 6 gallon plus member of the Rock River Valley Blood Center.

Survivors include wife, Joann; daughters, Tracie Mullen, Dawn (Jim) Busby; son, George David (Elizabeth) Mullen; granddaughters, Amy (Steve) Walker, April Hon, Lindsey (Travis) Hippard, Lacey (Andy) Swanson; grandson, Brad Hon; great granddaughters, Hailey, Winnie, Annabelle; great grandsons, Zach, Josh, Seth; brothers, Gary (Joanne), Dennis; and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents; brother, Wayne; brother-in-law, Robert Ceruti; and granddaughter, Millie Ann.

Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2018 in Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory – Mulford Chapel, 4311 N. Mulford Road, Loves Park with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial in Willwood Burial Park, Rockford. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family to be used in John’s name at a later date.
