Donald W. Johnson, 83, of Rockford passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2018 in OSF St. Anthony Hospital. Born October 18, 1934 in Rockford to John G. and Mary A. (Charles) Johnson. A graduate of Rockford East High School, Class of 1953. Married Millie Johnson on September 11, 1954. Don began work in 1958 as a patrolman for the Rockford Police Department, in 1964 he was assigned a cruiser and later that year to the traffic department. In 1967 Don was assigned as a traffic accident investigator and worked his way up to Detective in 1969 where he remained until his retirement in 1986. Worked court security at the old federal courthouse for 15 years, retiring in 1999. Don was a lifetime member of the PBPA and member of the NRA. He was well respected throughout the community, always had a smile and a firm handshake. One of the best detectives in Rockford.
Survivors include daughters, Gail (Rick) Baer, Roxanna (Bill) Trinka, Melissa (Steve) Lewis; grandchildren, Chelsea (James) Kiley, Brian (Lexi) and Brad (Kaley) Baer, Kelly and Kristin Lewis; great grandchildren, Kingston and Kherington Kiley, Kayden Baer, Lauren, Kate, Maeve Baer; twin sister, Pauline (Ralph) Docker; brother, Paul Johnson; sister-in-law, Jean Johnson; partner and caregiver, Nancy Johnson; and childhood friend, John Nash. Predeceased by brother, Bob Johnson; and sisters-in-law, Darlene Johnson, and Beverly Johnson. 2 David 6, You are free to go!
Funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2018 in Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory – Mulford Chapel, 4311 N. Mulford Road, Loves Park with a visitation from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers memorials to the family to be used in Don’s name at a later date.
