Shirley Kane Smith

Shirley Kane Smith, 93, of Rockford, died peacefully on April 30, 2017. Shirley was born August 30, 1923, in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Thomas F. Kane and Edna F. Strout. Shirley graduated from Portland High School and attended the University of Wisconsin where she earned her associates degree in Liberal Arts and later a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Leo's University in Florida. In 1943, Shirley married Woodrow Smith and had two children. When Woody retired from the Marine Corps in 1972 they started traveling. In addition to visiting all the states they traveled abroad and toured Europe, Australia, Taiwan and other exotic locales. When they ended their travels they settled in Florida. Shirley was an avid reader. She enjoyed playing bridge, crossword puzzles and golf. 

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Sherry Ragone; son, Gary Smith; granddaughter, DeAnna Krejci; grandsons, Jason Smith, Eric Bull and Kevin Bull; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

Shirley will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery next to her husband. A celebration of life is planned for this summer in Portland, Maine.
