Robert "Bob" WheelerFebruary 23, 1925 ~ May 7, 2017 (age 92)
Robert “Bob” Wheeler, 92, of Rockford passed away Sunday, May 7, 2017. Born February 23, 1925 in St. Paul, MN to Colonel Druid E. and Mary L’Amoreaux (Lathrop) Wheeler. A veteran of the US Army Aircorps Division, serving during WWII as a tail gunner in a B17 bomber stationed in Deenethorpe, England. Attended Kemper Military School and Georgia Military College. Married Betsy Nobles on October 20, 1951 in Greenville, NC. A member of Second Congregational Church, Rockford Country Club, and the University Club. A pitcher for the Pittsburg Pirates on their KOM League Farm Club. Bob enjoyed RC flying, but his ultimate passion was golf. If you didn’t find “Wheels” on the golf course, you would most likely find him tinkering in his workshop.
Survivors include children, Mary (David) Dunks, Robert Lathrop (Cindy) Wheeler, Jr., Jeffrey Allen (Lynette) Wheeler; grandchildren, Gregory Quilty, Courtney Wheeler, Jamie Wheeler, Arden Wheeler, Brynn Wheeler, Paige Wheeler; and great grandchild, Kamryn Quilty. Predeceased by wife, Betsy; and brother, Druid E. Wheeler, Jr.
Private family services are to be held at a later date. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.
