Melvin Allen Sparlin, 89, of Rockford passed away Thursday, November 30, 2017. He was born August 12, 1928 in Flora, Illinois to Sybil (Briscoe) and Edward Sparlin. He married Wilma (Pug) Bible on September 30, 1950 in Louisville, Illinois. He was an executive with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, The American Heart Association, and other HMO organizations. He began his career with the Illinois Farm Bureau. He was an active member of Rotary International serving as a District Governor and assisting in the formation of the Byron Illinois Rotary Club. Melvin was also very active in his church, Creekwood Baptist Church, and in the American Baptist Men’s Association for which he served as President. Melvin was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He loved gardening, high school and college basketball, serving others and his family.
Melvin most especially loved his wife of 60 years, Wilma (Pug) Sparlin, who preceded him in death (2011). Survivors include his siblings, Francis and Judith; children, Julie Leese, Denise Burns, John Sparlin and Brent Sparlin; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sybil and Edward; his brothers, James and Howard; his sisters, Evelyn and Ruby; and by his wife, Wilma (Pug).
Visitation will be on Sunday, December 3, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00pm in Creekwood Baptist Church, 7281 Olde Creek Road, Rockford, 61114. Funeral service will be at 10:00am with a visitation from 9:00am until the service in Creekwood Baptist Church on Monday, December 4, 2017. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Creekwood Baptist Church. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
