Martha Sue Hanson

Martha Sue Hanson, 90, passed away on December 20, 2016 at Wesley Willows Senior Center.  She was born on July 10, 1926 the daughter of William Latham and Estelle Cunningham of Murray, Kentucky.  She graduated from Murray High School in 1944 and from Murray State University in 1948 with a major in elementary education.  Her teaching career spanned 15 years in the Sidell and Roscoe, Illinois districts. 

Sue and Wally married in 1948 and had celebrated 68 years of marriage.  Sue enjoyed cooking and baking for friends and neighbors, particularly the “Pot-Luck Gang” of Roscoe.  She loved her church family and actively participated by serving on the Education and Finance committees and joined various women’s groups.  She enjoyed reading, traveling and visiting with relatives and friends. 

She is survived by her husband, Wallace (Wally) of Rockford; son, Mark (Karen) of Richmond, Texas; granddaughter, Caroline of Richmond, Texas; grandson, Matthew (Lori) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; great-grandson, Luke.  There are numerous nieces and nephews in different states with a special niece, Marilyn Miller in Murray, Kentucky. Predeceased by her parents, William Latham and Estelle Cunningham; brother, Burl Cunningham; sister, Crystalline Cunningham Hopkins; 18 year old son, Greg; infant granddaughter, Maris Kathleen; infant grandson, Michael Joseph.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Roscoe United Methodist Church, 10816 Main St., Roscoe, IL 61073, with  visitation  at 10:00 a.m. until time of service.  A luncheon will follow the memorial service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Roscoe United Methodist Church or to the Harlem Roscoe Fire Department. 

The Hanson family would like to thank Wesley Willows, Northern Illinois Hospice, Harlem-Roscoe Fire Rescue and Mona and Bobbie for the care and concern given to Sue. 

Cremation rites have been accorded. Honquest Family Funeral Homes with Crematory, Roscoe Chapel, is honored to have assisted the family.
