George Stoneburner, Jr., 85, of Rockford passed away peacefully with his loving wife, Alice, by his side on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. Born in Pana, IL on June 8, 1932 to George and Elva (Butler) Stoneburner; married Alice Carlson Holman on December 6, 2003. George entered the U.S. Army November 8, 1949 and received infantry training at Fort Riley in Kansas after being sent to a replacement depot in California. He was assigned to a Quartermaster Group in Guam; his group left for Korea in July, 1950. He was assigned to the 3rd Platoon, Company B, 9th Regimental Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. He was discharged on November 18, 1952 and was a Purple Heart recipient. He graduated from Greenville College and received a Masters Degree from Bradley University in counseling and had a career as a teacher. He enjoyed reading, studying, writing, traveling and also feeding and watching the birds on his deck. He was a member of the American Legion and Christ Church Unity of Rockford.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; sons, Randall Mark and Boyd Scott (Myrt Boyd) Stoneburner; step-daughters, Janice (Don) Sell, Susan (Greg) Harwood, Karen (Rob) Holmes and Sandy Holman; sister, Lorene Mareau. Predeceased by his parents, George Stoneburner and Elva Jet; sister, Shirley Jane.
The family wishes to thank the hospice nurses and staff for their wonderful care at the Community Living Center in the VA clinics and hospital in Madison, WI. A special thank you to Tamera Malone, Cardiology Nurse Practitioner who cared for George for several years.
Memorial service will be at 11:00am with a Visitation from 10:00am until the service on Saturday, May 5, 2018 in Christ Church Unity of Rockford, 4381 Manchester Dr., Rockford 61109. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Christ Church Unity of Rockford or Carpenter's Place.
