Dimmis (Lathrop) Weller

Dimmis Lathrop Weller, 90, passed away February 16, 2017.   She was born on September 22, 1926 in Rockford, Illinois to Jean Wilkinson Lathrop and William Lathrop. She attended Keith Country Day School, The Madeira School in McLean, Virginia, Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York and Rockford College where she graduated with a BA in French.

Dimmis married Stuart Weller on November 19, 1950 at Second Congregational Church in Rockford. They have two children, Dimmis (Greg) Zeigler of Jackson Hole, Wyoming and David Weller of Tiverton, Rhode Island; five grandchildren, Alex (Megan) Zeigler, Wil Zeigler, Jameson Laurens, Lindsay Giannini, William Weller; and four great-grandchildren.

Dimmis was a community volunteer with Keith Country Day School, Rockford Memorial Hospital, the Junior League of Rockford, Rockford Garden Club, Rockford Art Association, Monday Club and Rockford Women’s Club. 

She loved to entertain and decorate, arranging flowers for parties and bouquets for her friends. The Weller’s home on National Avenue was a welcoming place where family and friends gathered for over 50 years. Christmas was Dimmis’s favorite holiday and she made elaborate decorations. She and Stuart hosted holiday parties every year. She was a grand lady of great style. She was uniquely charming and full of light.

Dimmis suffered from Alzheimer’s-type dementia for the last years of her life but never lost her warmth and friendliness, welcoming people into her home with a big smile. Her family and friends were so important to her every day. 

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Rockford Country Club, 3500 Oxford Street, Rockford 61103 in the ballroom. There will be a short reception following to greet the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Scholarship Fund at the University Club of Rockford, Rockford University, Northern Illinois Hospice, Second Congregational Church or the Illinois Alzheimer’s Association.
