Charles "Chuck" E. Hansel

Charles "Chuck" Edward Hansel, 69, of Roscoe, IL passed away unexpectedly on July 21, 2017.   Born in Guttenberg, IA on December 17, 1947, Chuck received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Loras College and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Illinois.  On July 15, 1972, Chuck married Mary Lynn "Lynn" Larson in Guttenberg, IA.  Chuck served as a counselor at Singer Mental Health Center for 33 years. 

Chuck loved fishing, the outdoors, and spending time with family. He enjoyed many fishing trips to Potato Lake in Wisconsin over the years and his annual family fishing trip to Lost Lake in Wisconsin. He truly enjoyed helping others, and spent his retirement working with the Rockton Food Pantry, Boy Scout Troop 643, serving on numerous boards including the board of Children's Home and Aid for 15 years and the board of Youth Service Network, and doing many fish fries for charity events. During the last few years Chuck was delighted to serve as chaplain for the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department and in 2016 was Chaplain of the Year.  

He was very devoted to his church family and was involved with many programs and organizations at Roscoe UMC. He was always on hand for RUM Men's fundraisers and projects: cutting wood with Woodchucks, pancake breakfast at Fall Festival, early morning breakfast meetings, biscuit and gravy fundraisers to name just a few. Chuck also loved music and sharing his rich bass voice singing with the Chancel Choir, Men's Choir and The Good News Band (Blue Grass Gospel Group).

Most of all Chuck loved his family. Lynn was the love of his life and constant companion and partner in crime for just over 45 years. He was very proud of his sons and their accomplishments. He was so proud of Timothy achieving his PhD in Philosophy and teaching at Edgewood College and his marriage to his lovely Amy. He was tirelessly devoted to Todd's recovery from a Traumatic Brain Injury resulting from an accident in 1996 and took pride in his every accomplishment. It goes without saying that his newest love was his granddaughter, Ellie, who he couldn't spend enough time with. 

Chuck is survived by his wife, Lynn; his two sons, Timothy (Amy) Hansel and Todd Hansel and his granddaughter, Eleanor Hansel; his sister, Jeanne (Loras) Strecher; his niece, Julie Nuehring Konzen and her children, Emily and Lauren; and his nephew, Kevin Nuehring.  Chuck is predeceased by his father and mother, Theodore Roosevelt Hansel and Rita Miller Hansel as well as his brother-in-law, Harold "Harry" Nuehring.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00pm on Wednesday, July 26, in Roscoe United Methodist Church, 10816 Main Street, Roscoe. Funeral service will be Thursday, July 27, at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at Roscoe United Methodist Church.  If you would like to remember Chuck with a gift or donation in his name, some of his favorite (he had so many) charities include: Children's Home and Aid, Youth Service Network, Rockton Food Pantry or the Roscoe UMC music endowment fund.  Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory Roscoe Chapel is honored to assist the family.
